Pre-Requisite Knowledge

Normally successful completon of Introducton to Biological, Cognitve and Developmental Psychology at level two, or equivalent.

Summary of Content

This module will explore each of the following theoretcal areas: atenton, percepton, representaton, face processing, introducton to memory research, everyday memory, memory structure and processes, long-term memory and forgetng, language, decision making and reasoning. Throughout key linkages between these different areas of human cogniton will be illuminated and the applicaton of these theories will be explored in some depth.

Syllabus

Theories of atenton, percepton and representaton will be explored and then brought together in an exploraton of why eyewitness misidentfcaton is by far the biggest source of wrongful convicton. Various theories of memory and memory defcits will be explored followed by a look at how the applicaton of these theories can improve memory performance in both normal and clinical populatons. Theories of language, decision making, reasoning and emoton will be explored, followed by an exploraton of how heuristcs and biases impede our ability to make ratonale real world choices in areas as diverse as love, fnance and terrorism. Throughout the focus will be on the applicaton of theoretcal knowledge to the soluton of common real-world problems.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students should be able to:1.Describe, discuss and evaluate the main approaches adopted by psychologists to the study and application of humancognition (assessed in summative exam).2.Gain a critical understanding key historical, philosophical and psychological antecedents of cognitive psychology(assessed in summative exam).3.Appreciate how theories of human cognition can be used to understand and contribute to solving real-world problems(assessed in summative exam).4.Critically evaluate empirical studies of human cognition (assessed in using both a formative and summative lab report).

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The course will be taught by a series of lectures and actvity-based laboratory sessions. The coursework for the module consists of conductng an empirical project in an applied area of cogniton and writng a Lab Report based on this. This will be carried out in a group and supervised by a member of staf. Students are expected to write up the project individually. Coursework will include formatve assessment of a draf version of the Lab Report, prior to summatve assessment. Material will be delivered using an online/blended learning approach.

Transferrable Skills

Through laboratory work students will learn to work in small groups. Several skills will be enhanced through this process. Students will learn to design and implement experiments using a variety of methods including questonnaires and specialist computer sofware. Data management, analysis and statstcal testing skills will be enhanced. Students will further develop their 'scientfc' writng skills through the writng up of their fndings in a properly structured report. Students will understand the process of gaining ethical approval for psychological research.
