Summary of Content

This module builds on the student's initial introduction to treatment planning in Physics for Oncology Practice and develops their skills in identifying and outlining critical structures, applying beam modification and producing treatment plans. Students have the opportunity to integrate and apply their anatomical and radiotherapy knowledge in this module. In addition students will learn about the role of radioisotopes in radiotherapy treatment, notably brachytherapy. This module constructively aligns with the practice education module that includes clinical visits to brachytherapy theatre and treatment suite and sealed source handling department.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:-1. Discuss hardware and software requirements and functionality of the treatment planning system2. Discuss and apply t practice guidelines associated with current planning procedures3. Perform manual and computer dose calculations4. Discuss the application of radioisotopes in therapeutic practice5. Describe the construction of sealed sources and their applications in practice6. Evaluate the role of brachytherapy in oncology7. Explain the legislation governing the safe use of radioisotopes in medicine8. Discuss national and international guidelines regarding image guided brachytherapy

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module will combine a number of key note lectures that will be complemented with a series of tutorials and independent study. A range of teaching and learning activities will be utilised to develop student learning and engagement, directed teaching, and simulated learning. Students are also supported by access to GCUlearn (virtual learning environment) and GCULearn mobile technology to facilitate communication, provide access to module materials and provide feedback on formative and summative assessments. Activities utilising the treatment planning system will enhance student understanding of treatment planning processes. Formative activities are undertaken at key points throughout the module to demonstrate effective learning in areas which are known to be conceptually challenging.
