Summary of Content

This module aims to extend student's knowledge of anomalies of binocular vision, with emphasis on the role of the orthoptist and dispensing optician in the investigation and management of these disorders. The module will focus on the clinical examination, diagnosis and management of amblyopia, concomitant strabismus and develop the students understanding of abnormal binocular single vision.

Syllabus

Binocular Anomalies Introduction to the course, its objectives, clinical arrangements, book lists, reference list. Characteristics of Binocular Vision, Classification of BV anomalies. Concomitant squint, primary and secondary angles. Sherrington's Law. Actions of Extra Ocular muscles. Diagnosis and Management of Heterophoria/ Heterotropia: Esotropia/Esophoria, Exotropia/Exophoria: Hypertropia/Hyperphoria: Hypotropia/Hypophoria: Cyclophoria: aetiology, management: refractive, prismatic, orthoptic procedures for all Sensory adaptations to strabismus. Confusion, diplopia Suppression - types, methods of assessment, treatment of ARC Theories of ARC - binocular status in ARC, Special Forms of Strabismus. Amblyopia - classification, investigation, assessing vision in children Eccentric Fixation - Investigation, Management Theories of eccentric fixation. Management of amblyopia, development of vision, binocular vision, effects of occlusion, animal models Psychophysics (visual perception) of functional amblyopia. Spatial vision in amblyopia . Paediatric/Adult dispensing. Effect of refractive error/spectacle correction in Binocular Vision Anomalies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to: Describe and classify, and evaluate binocular vision anomalies and their assessment.Relate and integrate visual processing of sensory adaptations to motor deviations. Apply knowledge of theory and practice related to epidemiology, pathology and treatment pertaining to progressive visual developmental anomalies. Critically assess available optometric, medical and therapeutic strategies within an informed, flexible and innovative approach to meet the specific needs of patients having binocular vision problems. Understand the role of spectacle correction in binocular vision anomalies and have a greater knowledge of paediatric dispensing.Apply an in-depth knowledge of the fluctuating nature of progressive and regressive binocular vision anomalies to the planning and delivery of appropriate treatment and support packages for sufferers. Maintain and extend a knowledge of advances in research in this cognate area and to develop a catalytic function in relation to research into and development of innovative treatment modalities.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module will consist of lectures, tutorials and seminar presentations. Practical aspects of clinical evaluation in the investigation and management of binocular vision anomalies are covered within labs and clinical placement. The teaching and learning strategy will be to encourage students to synthesize and develop the basic theoretical basis for the management of binocular vision anomalies in such a way as to allow them to apply the knowledge, in a clinical environment, to a variety of patient types. Students will be encouraged to develop their problem solving strategies and techniques to a level which will allow than to adopt a structured reflective approach to the clinical environment.
