Summary of Content

The module has been designed to support those employed in railway operations or seeking a career in railway operations, to function effectively in the railway operations context, and to provide them with the necessary knowledge and understanding of the elements shown in the syllabus The content of the module is as follows: -360b7 how businesses in general and railways in particular are organised and financed b7 the organisational development of railways in the UK b7 governance and regulation of the UK rail industry b7 the objectives, constraints and organisational structures of a range of different railway businesses.

Syllabus

The following key areas will be considered: -360b7 business organisations - their environments, ownership and finance, organisational structures, cultures and leadership styles, strategy, planning and contro.l b7 the market for rail transport. b7 development of the national rail network in Great Britain - construction, amalgamation, nationalisation, privatisation and developments over the last ten years. b7 governance of the rail industry - relationships between governments and railways, EU objectives and policies, Government bodies in England, Wales and Scotland, the Office of Rail Regulation. b7 Railway businesses - case studies of individual railway companies, infrastructure providers and train operators and an overview of rolling stock suppliers and other industry bodies.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students should be able to:1. Demonstrate an understanding of the political and economic context within which railways operate.2. Apply knowledge ,skills and understanding to demonstrate how the institutional arrangements impact on the management of the railway.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module is designed to be relevant to the student's workplace. The module teaching materials will be made available through GCULearn. This can also be used to facilitate on-line discussions with students. Support will be offered through webinars, e-mail on-line discussion and telephone. A tutorial event at the start of the module will bring students together from the programme. This also provides the opportunity to meet their tutors. Formative assessment will be used not only to encourage knowledge of the subject, but also to help develop transferable skills. Summative assessments will provide evidence of the learning achieved throughout the module. Summative assessments are compulsory. A mark of 35% must be achieved for each summative assessment and an overall mark of 40% must be achieved in the module.
