Summary of Content

Aim The aim of this module is to provide students with a qualitative understanding of the principles governing the determination of the Required Safe Egress Time (RSET) in buildings sufficient to estimate evacuation times using standard fire engineering calculations and simple evacuation models Summary of Content The module covers the relationship between building design and evacuation management including the factors which impact on behavioural response and the tenability criteria.

Syllabus

The statutory requirements for escape routes, human behaviour in fire situations, response to warning systems and tenability criteria are examined in the context of estimating pre-movement time and applying standard fire engineering calculations and evacuation models to estimate Required Safe Egress Time (RSET).

Learning Outcomes

1 - Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this module the student should be able to:-describe the physical, physiological and psychological aspects of escape from buildings under normal and emergency conditions-explain the requirements of the Building Regulations and appropriate design guides with reference to escape route design-recognise the key factors that influence evacuation for simple spatial configurations to identify the appropriate scenarios for detailed analysis-apply standard fire engineering calculations and a simple evacuation model to predict RSET

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The learning activities focus on student engagement through practical, problem solving exercises developed from 'real world' case studies. The key themes introduced in lecture sessions, and through directed reading, are explored through tutorial discussion and group exercises. Tutorial discussions allow students to reflect on their own and other students learning and understanding and on different approaches to problem solving. The Flexible and Distributed learning strategy is based on student attendance in a 5 day blocks (lectures, tutorials) combined with distance learning supported on GCU Learn(discussion groups, learning and reference materials). Learning and teaching strategies will be developed and implemented, appropriate to students' needs, to enable all students to participate fully in the programme.
