Summary of Content

This module aims to deliver the theoretical underpinning of physical principles, quality assurance and clinical applications of Fluoroscopy, Mammography, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Radionuclide and Ultrasound imaging. There will be exploration of the use of contrast media & drugs associated with imaging. Patient pathways will be discussed and imaging options evaluated.


With regards to Fluoroscopy, Mammography, CT, MRI, RNI and US: Physical principles Standard equipment and imaging systems Quality assurance Standard applications Protocol optimisation Patient care Health & Safety Radiation Protection Infection control Clinical decision making Guidelines, protocols and policies. Relevant anatomy & pathology in context Advantages and disadvantages of imaging modalities Pharmacology, applications and implications of common contrast media Commonly used drugs associated with imaging.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:1. Describe the physical principles, standard components and applications of Fluoroscopy, Mammography, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Radionuclide and Ultrasound systems.2. Discuss the indications, preparations and techniques for common Fluoroscopy, Mammography, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Radionuclide and Ultrasound procedures.3. Describe common quality assurance procedures and relevant health and safety legislation in relation to Fluoroscopy, Mammography, and Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Radionuclide and Ultrasound systems.4. Identify commonly utilized drugs and their pharmacological considerations in medical imaging. 5. Explore patient pathways and justify appropriate imaging.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

This module will combine key note lectures from academic and clinical staff with independent study. Module content will be consolidated supported by group tutorials. Pre-reading will be issued in preparation for teaching sessions to facilitate informed discussion in scheduled sessions. Tutorial tasks will be performed in small groups to enhance communication, collaboration and peer learning and support. Engagement in group working is essential to allow participation in tutorials and assessment. Case studies will be explored to encourage critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills. Directed learning will be issued to develop student self-enquiry, time management skills and promote the flexible curriculum. There will be opportunities for simulated Ultrasound learning and interactive sessions to reflect clinical practice. GCU Learn will be will be used to support learning by providing tasks to supplement key learning points and quizzes for formative assessment.

Transferrable Skills

In undertaking this module, students will have the opportunity to further develop communication and collaboration skills. Students will build independent study skills and further skills in ICT, e-learning, reviewing literature, reflection on practice, project and time management.
