Summary of Content
This module provides the student with the fundamental principles underlying the mechanical and electrical properties of materials.
Syllabus
The teaching syllabus will cover the following areas: Atomic Structure and Bonding: The internal structure of the atom will be examined and will include the electron orbital model of atomic structure. This will be extended to explain the differenct types of bonding, which occurs within materials. Crystal Structure: The main types of crystal lattices will be examined and the defects, which may occur, described. Properties of Materials: The main properties of materials will be described as will the methods used to quantify them. These will encompass: tensile strength; toughness; hardness; ductility; electrical and thernal conductors.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the student should be able to:Describe the internal structure of atoms and molecules.Describe the different types of crystals and the defects evident wihtin them, and explain how these defects affect the mechanical properties of materials.Discuss how the bonding within materials affects the properties of the material.Carry out the standard tests to determine the mechanical properties of materials.Describe the Electrical and Theremal properties of materialsDemonstrate transferable skills.
Teaching / Learning Strategy
Electronic based material will be used to introduce the fundamental concepts. Laboratory exercises will be used to demonstrate the more practical aspects of the course, some material will be taught exclusively by this mode. Problem based scenarios will be issued to the class to provide a forum for developing the students knowledge of the theoretical material. Support provided by virtual learning environment.
