Syllabus

Anatomy and Physiology: Thorax, upper and lower respiratory tract, respiratory membrane, respiratory defence mechanisms (including mechanical defence, non-specific and specific immune components); mechanics of breathing; innervation and circulation; control of breathing; gas transport and exchange, gas laws, oxygen dissociation curve Pathophysiology: Recognition of obstructive and restrictive ventilatory disorders. Indications and contraindications for performing lung function tests Pharmacology and Therapeutics: Types of inhaled drugs. Bronchodilators: mode of action, use and indications for administration, contraindications for use, interaction of common bronchodilators, side effects, assessment and interpretation of responses. Delivery systems: meter dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, volume spacing devices, nebulisers (jet and ultrasonic), aerosol kinetics Physiological Measurement: Instrumentation and gas analysis; flow and volume measuring devices; principles of techniques used; advantages, disadvantages and limitations of equipment types; correction to BTPS; guidlelines for performing tests; reversibility testing. Dynamic Lung Volumes: FEV 1 , FVC, VC, PFR, Static Lung Volumes: FRC, TLC, RV, ERV, IC, IVC, EVC, RV/TLC% IRV, TGV, principles of and equipment for helium dilution, nitrogen washout and body plethysmography. Transfer factor to include: T LCO , K C0 and eff VA, components of transfer factor; single breath-hold and rebreathing techniques

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student should be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of basic principles concerning the areas of the syllabus described elsewhere in this descriptor which will underpin the professional aspects of the Respiratory specialism of the Clinical Physiology programme.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The module material will be delivered in a 2 - 3 week specialist block by a combination of lectures, tutorials and seminars as well as directed learning exercises, practical problems and data interpretation. Lectures will provide the foundation material for the module which will be supplemented and enhanced by material delivered elsewhere on the programme. Tutorials will also allow practical applications of individual topics to the students' own work experience to be examined and discussed.
