-188 Programme Aims The aims of this programme are: -360-188b7 To improve your IELTS level by between 0.5 and 1.0 IELTS point per term; b7 To give you the chance to progress on to a favoured academic programme; b7 To get you used to using online technology for independent learning; b7 To increase your confidence in the use of English language in both an academic and social environment; b7 To get you used to relevant future academic subjects/subject-matter. b7 Designed for students at equivalent IELTS level of between 3.0 - 4.5. The programme is modular-based, with modules designed to suit the appropriate language level.

Syllabus

-108 The course aims to continue to develop students' ability to use an expanded range of grammatical structures and language patterns and further develop their repertoire of vocabulary and features of spoken English. This development should facilitate the improvement of spoken and written accuracy and enhance their reading skills, and allow students to cope better with more challenging texts as they move further into academic contexts and tasks. The activities in this component are designed to practise what students have learnt in meaningful contexts. Students will increase their knowledge of, and accuracy in, grammar and vocabulary through a variety of tasks and group work. Language structures and vocabulary typical of Academic English: b7 text coherence and cohesion b7 linking words b7 features of different genres b7 vocabulary building b7 appropriate style b7 language tasks for sub-skills development (reading for gist, reading for specific information, reading for clarification) b7 summarising (shorter and longer texts) b7 note-taking b7 essay and report writing b7 planning and organising presentations The usage of a blended learning approach aims to improve the student experience, allowing more flexible, self-paced study outside the classroom. The approach is designed to enhance student progression by integrating traditional classroom learning with specially selected content on the MyINTO Platform.

Learning Outcomes

Listening: identify the main points of spoken English on familiar topics, if they are delivered in graded and clear standard pronunciation Listening: identify the main points and some detail of spoken English, that includes a focus on academic content, if it is delivered in clear standard pronunciation Reading: show comprehension of written texts at B1 (intermediate) level. Reading: read graded, semi-authentic and selected authentic texts and some on general, simple academic and subject related topics extensively. Reading: demonstrate some strategies that allow them to read these texts with good fluency and detailed understanding. Writing: produce written work at B1 (intermediate) level. Writing: write a range of academic texts. Speaking: interact and communicate at B1 (intermediate) level Speaking: exchange, check and confirm meaning with reasonable fluency and appropriate detail in an extended conversation, which includes words from academic corpora, although still developing skills in order to engage in debates.

Teaching / Learning Strategy

The module will develop essential skills necessary for undertaking study through the English language. Successful completion of the course will enable students to undertake a higher level English Language course which has a greater focus on the development and consolidation of Academic Language Skills. Classes focus on the 4 language skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking, explored in an academic context, as well as on grammar and pronunciation. Promoting independent learning is an integral part of this module.
