Pacific Island nations to unveil flag bearers

Athletes from Pacific Island nations will gather at GCU on the eve of the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) will welcome athletes from Pacific Island nations to the campus for an official flag bearer naming ceremony on Tuesday, July 22.

Teams, officials and dignitaries from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga and Tuvalu will gather at GCU on the eve of the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony for an evening of celebration.

The proceedings will include a dance presentation from Kiribati and will culminate with the announcement of each nation’s choice of flag-bearer for the Games.

The Flag Bearer Naming Ceremony for the Islands of the Pacific is being organised by the Oceania Sports Alliance, which was set up after the London Olympics to provide support for Pacific Island nations sport programmes in Europe.
