Asia Foundation’s Lotus Circle has honoured Nobel Laureate and GCU Chancellor Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Professor Yunus received a Lotus Award for his Nobel Prize-winning vision to give small loans to poor women to lift themselves out of poverty at the fourth annual Lotus Leadership Awards in New York City on Wednesday, June 18.

The Asia Foundation is a non-profit international development organisation committed to improving lives across a dynamic and developing Asia; the Lotus Circle is a community of individuals and organisations working with The Asia Foundation to empower women and girls in Asia.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Jimmy Carter made special video appearances congratulating Professor Yunus and the other award winners, The Estée Lauder Companies, who were recognised for their work in Vietnam to continue girls’secondary school education, and Nani Zulminarni, who has helped more than 10,000 female leaders in Indonesia.

Carol Yost, from the Asia Foundation, said:“Access to finance is a key issue for women entrepreneurs and Professor Yunus has helped level the playing field so that women can access credit and lift themselves and their families out of poverty.”
