Her Excellency Dr Rawya Saud AlBusaidi was today awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), in recognition of her significant contribution to the development of education.

Her Excellency Dr AlBusaidi was the first woman in the Sultanate of Oman to be appointed to full ministerial rank.

University Secretary and Vice-Principal Governance Jan Hulme said: “Dr AlBusaidi has driven ground-breaking projects for the reform of education in Oman, including access to higher education, gender equality and benchmarking education to international norms.”

Since 2004, she has been serving as Oman’s Minister of Higher Education, Deputy Chair of the Council of Education, and Chair of the Sultan Qaboos University Council. In 2005, she was appointed as Deputy Chair of Oman’s Research Council.

Other governmental appointments include membership of the Supreme Planning Council, Chair of the Executive Committee of the project to establish the University of Oman, as well as membership of the Supreme Committee for that project.

Before her appointment as Minister, HE Dr AlBusaidi served successively as Director General of two different directorates within the Ministry of Higher Education then as Undersecretary.

With an academic background in science education, including a DPhil from the University of Oxford, HE Dr AlBusaidi was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by Washington & Jefferson College in recognition of her significant contribution to the development of education in Oman over the past three decades.

She has chaired many major projects for the reform of education, including a comprehensive plan for both school and higher education, titled ‘A Strategic Plan for Education to 2040’. HE Dr AlBusaidi has also represented Oman at several major world conferences, the most recent of which were the Summit of South American-Arab Countries (ASPA) in Peru and the Dialogue of Civilizations International Symposium in Turkey.
