Scots stars attend exhibition at GCU New York

Billy Connolly at GCU New York

Comedian Billy Connolly, broadcaster Kirsty Wark and actor Alan Cumming were just a few of the Scottish stars to gather at GCU New York during Scotland Week.

They are among the 16 prominent Scots who have been depicted in an exhibition of portraits – ‘A Brush with Inspiration’ – by Glasgow artist Gerard Burns. The event was opened by Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE, who welcomed guests to the University’s campus in SoHO.

Portraits of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Ewan McGregor, Brian Cox, Helena Kennedy QC and composer Craig Armstrong also feature in the exhibition.

Gerard said: “The sitters are a combination of talented Scots with an American profile, Scots who have made it in New York and Scots talent that we just want to celebrate.”

Born in Glasgow in 1961, Gerard is one of Scotland’s most respected artists. The exhibition builds on the success of his 14 for 14 exhibition, which was launched during the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year.

Scotland Week is an annual programme of business, civic and tourism engagements aimed at the promotion of Scotland as a great place to study, live, visit, do business, and invest.

The exhibition runs until April 17. Proceeds from sales of the paintings and donations will go to The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow.
