This programme prepares students for a career as Chartered General Practice Surveyors, professionals involved in the valuation, management of property, as well as investment in and development of property across the commercial, industrial and residential sectors. They may also be involved in structuring the deals for sales and acquisitions of properties.
Study Real Estate at GCU and you will gain the knowledge and experience to undertake property valuations, carry out development appraisals, provide advice on property investment, manage property assets, real estate sales and acquisitions and to become a Chartered Surveyor. You'll also benefit from a one year paid work experience which you can use towards RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) status. The BSc Real Estate degree is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the course qualifies you for RICS graduate membership.
Graduates have gone on to work in international firms such as CBRE, Colliers International, Cushman & Wakefield, Drivers Jonas, Deloitte, Jones Lang La Salle, Knight Frank and Lambert Smith Hampton and in UK organisations such as DM Hall, Gerald Eve, Graham & Sibbald, GVA James Barr, Ryden, various local local authorities, Network Rail, NHS Estates and Valuation Office Agency.
Continuation of core skills modules with additional study including Advanced Construction Technology, Property Development, Valuation, Construction & Property Contracts, Property Management and Urban Planning.
Professional placement which counts towards the two years of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).
Honours Dissertation and further studies including Advanced Commercial Investment Valuation, Statutory Valuation, Real Estate Portfolio Management &Investment, Corporate Property Management, Facilities Management, ProjectManagement, Urban Regeneration and Negotiation Skills.

Full-time entry requirements
Year 2 entry only
College HNC: 15 credit HNC in a Built Environment subject with a minimum B in graded unit
A level: BBC plus GCSE English and Maths at C/4
BTEC: Level 3 Extended Diploma in Built Environment subject at DMM. Completion of 2-week Summer School programme is also required.

College HNC/D: HNC or HND Built Environment with B in the graded units
Applicants to the part-time programme must be in suitable full- time employment within industry.
Students whose first language is not English will normally be required to hold the equivalent of an Academic IELTS test score of 6.0 with no element less than 5.5.
Please note: if you are from a majority English speaking country, you may not be required to provide further proof of your English Language proficiency.
Other academic and vocational qualifications
Each application to GCU is considered on an individual basis. If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognised professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme.
If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for our pre-sessional English programme which is taught at our Glasgow campus.

For new international students, particular care is taken around our induction events which begin on 13 September 2019 to welcome you to the UK and GCU prior to the start of teaching. Where possible, we encourage you to arrange travel to allow you to arrive in time to enjoy these.
A year-long work placement is an essential part of the course, completed in the 3rd year of study. Students have the option to carry out their placement either in the UK or abroad.

Study exchange opportunities exist with partner institutions overseas. The programme has participated in exchanges with Universities in Lahti (Finland), Lecce (Italy), Melbourne and Toronto.

A variety of assessment methods, including coursework activities and formal examinations, are included within the modules. Our approach to teaching involves mixing traditional methods whilst employing modern technology, which in practice means our students can access materials through blackboards, weblinks, wikis and voice recordings. For some parts of the course, lectures are recorded and uploaded onto GCULearn, allowing our students to access the material when it suits them through a variety of media, such as a smart phone. Our students are partly assessed through undergoing real life practical experience often involving live projects allowing them to put into practice the theory they have learned. In part these assessments are organised to mirror how the professional body which accredits our course, the Royal Institution of Practical Surveyors would assess for professional competence.
This course has very good links with industry which allows us to share in their professional knowhow. Our students are introduced to valuation practice software by Ryden, a leading firm of chartered surveyors and we are allowed access to the database of CoStar, a commercial property information provider. One of our key targets is to give our students national and international experience. Depending on availability of financial resources, students have, in the past, spent a week out of every year of their course studying various UK and International commercial property markets. Students can also spend a year studying at a European university under the Erasmus exchange programme and uniquely could also spend a semester or further year studying at Ryerson University in Toronto.
