Microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae and protozoa can sometimes be harmful and cause infectious diseases. Others are beneficial and are exploited by biotechnology industries to produce food, alcoholic drinks and drugs.
Until recently many clinicians thought of the diseases caused by microorganisms as largely being solved. This assessment was too optimistic and microbiology is re-emerging as a critical science to face new challenges from organisms that no longer respond to conventional antibiotic treatment or vaccination programmes.
The Microbiology programme structure combines a broad base in bioscience with in-depth specialist knowledge. Major emphasis is placed upon laboratory work throughout the programme, culminating in a five-day practical molecular biology workshop that brings together theory and practice.

Standard entry requirements
SQA Higher: BBBB including Chemistry, one other science and essay-based subject such as English, History or Modern Studies plus Maths/English/Biology or Human Biology at Int 2/Nat 5 B.
A level: BBC including Chemistry plus GCSE Double Science, English and Maths B/6
ILC Higher: H2 H2 H3 H3 including Chemistry at Higher Ordinary level English, Maths and Biology at 02
IB Diploma: 28 points including Chemistry at Higher Level and Biology at Standard Level at Grade 5
BTEC: Level 3 Extended Diploma in relevant subject including Chemistry and Biology at DMM plus GCSE Double Science at BB is essential in addition to GCSE English and Maths
College HNC: Relevant subject which must include Genetics with B in graded units and sufficient coverage of chemistry.
SWAP: Access SWAP Science Programme at BBB
Accepted as equivalent to one Higher as part of the overall grade profile of Highers required for entry. Any essential subjects at Higher should still be achieved in addition to the Foundation Apprenticeship.

Each application to GCU is considered on an individual basis. If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognised professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme.
Academic IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) with no element below 5.5.
If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for our pre-sessional English programme which is taught at our Glasgow campus.
For new international students, particular care is taken around our induction events which begin on 13 September 2019 to welcome you to the UK and GCU prior to the start of teaching. There will be a whole host of fun and informative activities taking place during this period, including campus tours, city tours and social events where you can meet other international students. Where possible, we encourage you to arrange travel to allow you to arrive in time to enjoy these.
