For people with physical or mental health limitations, everyday tasks may be difficult. However, through activity, occupational therapy enables people to live more productive and enjoyable lives.
To meet the standards of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, a minimum of 1000 hours of practice placement is required. As one of the largest providers of qualified Occupational Therapists in Scotland, GCU is innovative in practice placement experience, resulting in job creation in new areas of practice.
Occupational Therapists work as part of a team and a third of this programme is dedicated to inter-professional study, where students from a range of health and social care professions learn together.
As practice education placements are offered across a wide range of settings within Scotland there will be an expectation to travel and/or relocate as part of the programme.

Accepted as equivalent to one Higher as part of the overall grade profile of Highers required for entry. Any essential subjects at Higher should still be achieved in addition to the Foundation Apprenticeship.
Year 2HNC Occupational Therapy Support. Applicants will be required to attend an interview as part of the admissions process.
Prior to entry all students have to undertake Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check and Occupational Health screening.
Other Academic and Vocational Qualifications
Each application to GCU is considered on an individual basis. If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognised professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme.
Applicants whose first language is not English will normally be required to hold IELTS of overall 7.0 with 6.5 in each element or equivalent.
If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for our pre-sessional English programme which is taught at our Glasgow campus.

Tuition fees 2019/20
*Total tuition fees for RUK students completing a three or four year degree are capped at £27,750.

Additional costs for fee paying students
Self-funded students are required to cover the cost of the following:
- Uniforms, approximately £15 each. The number of uniforms you require depends on duration of your course and can range from two to four.
- Occupational health checks and vaccination, approximately £200.
- Membership of Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme. New applications cost £59. Updates to existing scheme record costs £18.

- Professional body membership
- Professional body student membership is required as compulsory from Level 1 (this is needed in preparation for practice placement in role-emerging settings as they require to have professional indemnity cover). As a guide, the cost of student membership in 2017 was £5.00 per month.

For new international students, particular care is taken around our induction events which begin on 13 September 2019 to welcome you to the UK and GCU prior to the start of teaching. There will be a whole host of fun and informative activities taking place during this period, including campus tours, city tours and social events where you can meet other international students. Where possible, we encourage you to arrange travel to allow you to arrive in time to enjoy these.
We use a wide variety of interesting and challenging assessment methods to help you to develop personally, whilst simultaneously developing your knowledge and understanding of topics integral to occupational therapy practice.
The learning and teaching methods we use ensure that our programme is both vocationally relevant and academically challenging. Our approach is student-centred, practical, participative and relevant to the needs of employers.
We've moved away from the traditional teacher-centric learning to a more independent learning approach, where you are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills.
