Quantity Surveying pre-induction programme

Measurement for Direct Entrants

Monday 10th September to Friday 14th September 2018

The Measurement for Direct Entrants programme is delivered by the School of Engineering and Built Environment (SEBE) at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and has been designed for students who have received and accepted an offer into level 2 or 3 of the BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying programme.

The purpose of this programme is to introduce college students to;

  • the measurement rules contained in The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors New Rules of Measurement 2,
  • recording dimensions using the southern method of taking off and
  • the use of software packages for measurement and bill of quantities production.

Attendance is particularly important for students who are unfamiliar with the methods of measurement and measurement conventions outlined above.

Students will cover essential content from our Measurement 1 module. Attendance and completion of this programme will provide new students to GCU with the most up-to-date measurement techniques in preparation for further study and application of them once at GCU and within your future graduate career.

The Measurement for Direct Entrants programme is delivered on a full-time basis over five days, 10am - 4pm each day with an hour for lunch. There is no cost to attend. Students should report to M538 in the George Moore Building at 10am on Monday 10th September when an overview of the structure and content of the programme will be presented. To register to attend the Measurement for Direct Entrants programme please click here: REGISTER please register by Friday 1st September 2018.

Each teaching session will consist of a mixture of lectures, tutorials and lab sessions. During lectures students will be expected to take notes and at tutorials and within lab session tackle additional exercises with staff on hand to answer questions. An informal test will take place on the final day in order that students can gauge their level of competency.

Throughout the summer period our admissions team will invite all eligible students to the Measurement for Direct Entrants programme as and when HN results are officially confirmed. Admissions at GCU obtain official confirmation of results from colleges or the SQA. The School of Engineering and Built Environment will then contact students by email in the run up to the Measurement for Direct Entrants programme with any additional information.
