Estranged Students

Are you a current GCU student or applicant who is estranged from their family?

At Glasgow Caledonian University, we understand the additional difficulties of studying without the support of a family network. We are proud to have signed the Stand Alone pledge, to show our commitment to supporting estranged students. We have put the following supports in place to help you access GCU and maintain your place when studying here, including the opportunity to access a free accommodation scholarship with the Unite Foundation.

The term estranged refers to students studying without the support of a family network. Students in this position often have no contact with their family and have removed themselves due to a dysfunctional situation or irreconcilable differences.

Please get in touch if you would like more information on the support available for estranged students at GCU. Our named contact for estranged students is Rachel Hyslop, who can be contacted via email

We understand that finding a place to stay over the summer holidays can be difficult for students without family support. At GCU, we guarantee 365 day accommodation in Caledonian Court, our own halls of residence.

We also have a proud partnership with the Unite Foundation.  The Unite Foundation is a charitable organisation which works with university partners and supporters across the UK.  The aim of the organisation is to allow young people who are estranged from their family, or are leaving care, to realise their potential at university by offering free accommodation scholarships in their student accommodation – easing the worry of accommodation costs, and offering a sense of belonging for three years of university study  Visit Unite Foundation.

Academic Support

GCU is built up of three schools: Glasgow School for Business and Society, School of Health and Life Sciences and School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment. Each School in the university has a Learning Development Centre (LDC) which delivers academic writing support, ICT support, advice on study skills and supplementary guidance.

Students are encouraged to visit our LDCs for assistance associated with their studies. The Centres provide face-to-face and online academic support; through a blend of workshops, small group sessions, one-to-one appointments and tailored teaching. The support available to students is provided in a professional and understanding environment enabling students to advance their abilities and skills required to succeed at university.
