Permission To Leave (PTL)

The PTL process has been temporarily suspended due to COVID-19 as we understand and appreciate that many students are choosing to study via distance learning outside UK. However, the PTL process has been replaced with the COVID-19 international student travel form. You do not need permission to exit UK during the COVID-19 pandemic provided that your Programme are aware of your location, and provided that you have the ability to study remotely. Please note that you will be required to return to campus once face-to-face teaching is required from your Programme.

If, however, you require to take a period of leave during which you will not be able to study remotely, please contact your Programme Leader for permission.

Taught Students

Period of Absence:

  • For UG and PG students undertaking taught modules, usually the maximum length of absence that will be authorised is 2 timetabled weeks.
  • For MSc students undertaking dissertation only and wishing to undertake research field trip, usually the maximum length of absence that will be authorised is 4 weeks.

However, it is at the discretion of the Programme Leader/supervisor to approve the maximum length of absence stated, taking into consideration the amount of academic studies that the student may miss and the ability of the student.

PTL Process:

If you require to complete a Permission to Leave form, please discuss with your Programme Leader (PL) or Year Tutor (YT) in the first instance.  If the permission to leave is approved by the school, the PTL form should be completed and signed by yourself and PL/YT and submitted to your Programme Coordinator with flight evidence who will give you a copy of the PTL for you to carry when travelling.
