Communication Support for D/deaf students

Communication support workers provide assistance to D/deaf and hearing impaired students, so that they are able to fully access and participate in all forms of learning (lectures, seminars, labs and placements).

GCU works with external specialist agencies to provide professional communication support to our students. The two most common forms this takes are:

Electronic Note Takers (ENTs)

ENTs take notes for students using a laptop, producing a real time summary of everything which is said in class. Student's view the ENTs notes, in real time, on their own portable device (laptop or tablet). ENTs are professionally trained for this role, and can type at high speed, so that no information is missed.

Sign Language Interpreters

Interpreters support students whose preferred first language is BSL. Students who work with an interpreter may also be provided support from a note taker.
