All applications to study at GCU are considered on academic merit.

We encourage all students to disclose a potentially disabling condition or impairment at the point of applying to study at GCU. You can do this:

  • On your UCAS form
  • On a GCU course application form
  • Or you can complete the Self Assessment Questionnaire and return it to the Disability Team.

This means that the Disability Team are alerted to your possible enrolment and enables the Team to ensure that you receive appropriate advice, support and information for your studies. Any information you provide in relation to disability will be treated sensitively and in confidence.

The process is as follows:

 1. Disclose your needs: We encourage all students to disclose a potentially disabling condition or impairment as soon as possible. Any information you provide in relation to disability will be treated sensitively and in confidence. You may do this on your course application or by contacting us directly.

2. Self- Assessment Questionnaire: Complete a Self- Assessment Questionnaire and return it to the Disability Team. This can be downloaded from our website or collected from the Student Wellbeing reception.

3Evidence: Provide any medical or diagnostic evidence that you may have related to your disability.

4. Needs assessment: You will be invited to a meeting with a Disability Adviser who will discuss your concerns with you, in an informal and confidential one-to-one setting, and will advise you whether any individual adjustments, services or facilities may be of benefit to you.

5. Recommended Adjustments: If there are adjustments your lecturers need to make to support you in your studies, your Disability Adviser will record them in a report. This is shared with your lecturers and advises them how best to support you. This can be reviewed over time as your circumstances might change.

6. Disabled Students Allowance: Some additional arrangements are funded through a scheme called ‘Disabled Students Allowance’ (DSA). This scheme only covers home (UK resident) students. DSA applies only if your needs can not be met by the university. We can make loan equipment temporarily available to students for whom an application for equipment is to be made.
