All full time Tier 4 students should be actively studying and on campus during term time for taught students and throughout the academic year, except during approved vacation/holiday periods for research students.  However occasions can arise when students may have to leave the UK and take time away from campus for for emergency/personal reasons or study purposes, such as attending conferences and research field work.  In such occasions, it is important to obtain permission from your academic school and complete a Permission to Leave form when leaving the UK.

Taught Students

Period of Absence:

  • For UG and PG students undertaking taught modules, usually the maximum length of absence that will be authorised is 2 timetabled weeks.
  • For MSc students undertaking dissertation only and wishing to undertake research field trip, usually the maximum length of absence that will be authorised is 4 weeks.

However, it is at the discretion of the Programme Leader/supervisor to approve the maximum length of absence stated, taking into consideration the amount of academic studies that the student may miss and the ability of the student.

PTL Process:

If you require to complete a Permission to Leave form, please discuss with your Programme Leader (PL) or Year Tutor (YT) in the first instance.  If the permission to leave is approved by the school, the PTL form should be completed and signed by yourself and PL/YT and submitted to your Programme Coordinator with flight evidence who will give you a copy of the PTL for you to carry when travelling.
