GCU Student’s Association Student President, Susan Docherty, had no hesitations when registering for Scotland’s Virtual Kiltwalk to raise money for the Common Good Campaign.

Aware of the ongoing challenges that many of our students face around mental health, employability and financial hardship, Susan was keen to play an active role to lend some much needed support.

We had a chat with Susan to find out a bit more about her motivation behind getting involved in this national event taking place virtually in April.

What kind of challenge are you planning to do and why?

“Walking. I love walking, I put my headphones on and listen to some good tunes and my pace depends on the tempo of the music. I’m planning on pushing myself more than I have been used to recently for the Kiltwalk and walk at least 15 miles, otherwise it wouldn't be a challenge right?”

What motivated you to take part?

“I wanted to take part as the funds we raise go back into the Common Good fund which helps our students who need support this year more than ever.”

How are you preparing for your challenge?

“My daily walk in the winter consisted of a quick 30 minutes with my wee dog Trixie. I have added to this with 2 long walks at the weekend and will increase my daily walks to an hour or more if possible. And I am hoping this will have the added benefit of losing some of the extra pounds I have put on over lockdown”

The GCU Foundation would like to extend a massive thank you to Susan and all of the other staff members who have signed up so far.

If Susan has inspired you to take on a Kiltwalk challenge and you would like to join Team GCU to help raise money for students in need, please email to register your interest and you will be sent a free registration code to take part in a Kiltwalk challenge.

This year you can take part in a challenge of your choice – walk, run or do something fun – with 50% of all funds raised topped up by The Hunter Foundation.

If you’re not able to take on a challenge yourself but would still like to support the team, you can make a donation to TEAMGCU2021.
