GCU Student’s Association recently held their annual STAR Awards – with 14 winners declared on a night of celebrating student success!

First year Multimedia Journalism student Rachel Gibson has been awarded Best Behind The Mic for her excellent work with Radio Caley since starting last year.

Rachel joined the station in September 2019 and has went on to become Head of Music on the Radio Caley committee and has co-hosted three live shows.

Rachel was delighted to have been given the award. She said: “I feel amazing about winning Best Behind The Mic!

I really struggle with the radio aspect of my degree and was so set that I would never do Radio Caley, and even on my first show ever I messed up and told the co-hosts that I never wanted to be on mic again!

Since then, the radio station is now one of my favourite places to be in the university and I get excited about my shows and even join others when they need support or just company during their own shows. To go from stuttering and freaking out to being awarded Best Behind the Mic really does feel great and is also the confidence boost I think I needed.”

Rachel highly encourages anyone to get involved. She said: “At first I wasn’t interested, but because others in my course joined, I decided to as well! However, I now have a great interest in it and I am now heavily involved.
Not only that, but I met my best friends in the station who are students from a variety of courses that I wouldn’t have met had we not all been part of Radio Caley. I have a lot to thank the station for and I don’t think anyone has or ever will regret joining Radio Caley.”

The STAR Awards is an annual event held by GCU Students Association to celebrate students' hard work and dedication throughout the year. For more see here.
