A GCU student has been shortlisted for a national award just months after being accepted on to a prestigious scholarship.

Third year BSc Podiatry student Nancy Kelleher was nominated for the Student Leadership prize at the Flexitol Tomorrow’s Podiatry Awards by a member of the research team at GCU.

Nancy has now received confirmation that she’s made the final shortlist as one of five students from across the UK. The winner is set to be revealed through an online ceremony, taking place on July 2.

Having been accepted on to the Carnegie Trust Vacation Scholarship in May, Nancy described her surprise at the latest bit of good news.

She said: “I was pretty shocked because I didn’t even know I’d been put forward for it! I only found out after getting an email about being nominated and it’s great to see I’ve been shortlisted as a finalist.

It’s amazing to have that encouragement that all your work has come to something – I’m starting to think that maybe I am doing ok after all!”

She added: “I just wanted to do well with the course and it’s important to have that interest in everything.

The lecturers at GCU have definitely pushed me to go further - I couldn’t have done it without them.”

After a double dose of recognition, Nancy is also keen to encourage other students to make the most of their time at GCU.

She explained: If you have an interest in your course you should always try and take any opportunities that come your way.

It’s easy to think something is going to be too challenging but you don’t really know until you try – there’s really nothing to lose during your time here."
