A GCU PhD student has been recently awarded Best Presenter at an internationally recognised electronics symposium.

The ISIE (International Symposium on Industrial Electronics) annually gathers industry experts, researchers and academics to share ideas and experiences surrounding frontier technologies, breakthroughs and initiatives related to industrial electronics.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ISIE was hosted online and invited speakers to present using Zoom video calls.

PhD student Waqas Javed decided to present his research on “Data-Driven Fault Localization of a DC Microgrid with Refined Data Input”. Waqas’s presentation impressed the chairs of the ISIE enough to win Best Presenter 2020 at the conference.

Waqas felt delighted to have won the award for Best Presenter. He said: “I feel honoured and I am extremely happy to have received the award out of 100 participants. This provides me with a source of motivation towards my research.”

Due to the pandemic, Waqas had to present his findings virtually. He said: “I wanted to let other researchers know about my work and to get feedback on my research in order to learn more.

Presenting using a Zoom call was more challenging in a way that I would not be able to communicate. As it was virtual, we could not meet with other researchers to get their feedback in person”

For those studying a similar subject, Waqas recommends presenting their research at the ISIE conference. He said: “presenting your research at the conference helps give you confidence about the work that you have done so far.

It reassures you about your work and gives you motivation to achieve your research goals.”
