GCU’s award-winning Caledonian Club invited students from secondary schools around Glasgow to take part in a subject sample activity day on campus last week.

The “Think Ahead” project invites pupils from the Caledonian Club partner schools onto GCU’s campus to sample the various courses we offer through a carousel of subject specific activities.

Pupils had the opportunity to take part and engage with a variety of subjects such as media, radiography, accountancy, engineering and history. Each activity was demonstrated by a GCU member of staff or student that was studying the subject.

Fourth year Electronic and Engineering student Cameron Kerr emphasised the importance of showcasing subjects in this way. He said; “I don't think that schools do a great job at advertising the potential of the type of courses that are out there. You always hear about the type of jobs that come out of the course, but they don't always teach about the fun aspects of the subject.

For example, doing activities like this is really fun and it shows that you can also enjoy the subject. It's important not to get too caught up with studying and getting through the degree, because you can get a job at the end but you can also find some entertainment in them too.”

Second Year Nursing (Mental Health) student Mairead Gilmartin explained how activities like this can help young people consider different courses and careers. She said; “Being involved in the Caledonian Club as a student is a really great opportunity to show the passion for your course and encourage young people to consider going to University when it might not have been something they believed that they could achieve.”
