Two GCU students have been celebrating success after finishing second at a national rowing event.

Katrina Bryce & Kirsty MacArthur helped form part of the Glasgow University team who claimed second place in the Women’s Eight race at the Rutherford Head event in Newcastle two weeks ago.

BA (Hons) Fashion Design with Business student, Kirsty said: “I don’t really think we expected do so well – we’re all absolutely delighted.

A couple of girls were ill before the race so we hadn’t really raced as a team together, it was amazing to finish where we did.”

Katrina, who is studying BSC Nursing Studies (Adult) added: “We have a really talented team with some members racing internationally for Scotland and Sweden.

This was the international student’s last race before they head back home, so it was a nice way to finish up.”

The pair (who started out together at Castle Semple Rowing Club) are hoping to take their impressive form into the New Year at a number of events - including the prestigious Henley Boat Race in London.

Both would highly recommend other GCU students get involved in sport while studying.

Kirsty explained: “I think being active is so important because when you’re rowing it’s all you can think about - it definitely helps clear my head.”

Katrina said: “I’m obviously on placement quite a lot so I can be working full-time, at university and also trying to fit my rowing in.

Nevertheless, if you’re passionate about something you’ll always find a way to prioritise and get that balance in life that everyone needs.”
