GCU researcher appointed to board of arthritis charity

Professor Steultjens will join the Board of Trustees on September 1.

Martijn Steultjens, Professor of Musculoskeletal Health at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), is to join the Board of Trustees of Arthritis Care.

As Trustee, Professor Steultjens will be jointly-responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, which is the UK’s largest organisation working with and for people with arthritis.

An expert in human movement and the lead for GCU research into long-term conditions, Professor Steultjens has worked closely with Arthritis Care for several years. The charity has supported the recruitment of patients for clinical studies and has been a partner for focus groups and patient meetings to discuss topics of new research.

Professor Steultjens has spoken at Arthritis Care briefing meetings for politicians at both the Scottish Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly, updating them on arthritis care and research and contributing to discussions on the future direction of care for long-term conditions.

He is currently part of one of Europe’s largest ever investigations into the diagnosis and treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

Speaking about his appointment, Professor Steultjens said: “As well as allowing me the opportunity to give back to Arthritis Care, what motivated me to take up this voluntary role is the fact that it complements greatly my normal research perspective.

“Working closely with this patient-led charity will allow me to gain a much better understanding of the elements of daily life with arthritis that are not easily captured by our research projects.”

Professor Steultjens will take up the post from September 1.
