Chancellor Muhammad Yunus has advised the Mayor of Palermo, Senator Leoluca Orlando, on establishing a social business designed to address youth unemployment in the Sicilian capital.

Professor Yunus met Senator Orlando, Municipal Council President Salvatore Orlando and the city’s President of the Council of Culture Adham Darawsha, on August 7.

Senator Orlando hopes to use assets seized from organised crime to fund a project addressing unemployment among women and young people in the city. The University of Palermo indicated that it would like to award Professor Yunus an honorary degree during his next visit to the city.

During Professor Yunus’ visit, Senator Orlando told him that the Bangladeshi community has recently grown to become Palermo’s largest ethnic minority community.
