GCU’s Professor Stuart Baird has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Professor Baird will play a key role in increasing the group’s membership, growing its provision of educational resources and fully developing the faculty’s exam system.

Professor Baird will serve for three years as Dean of the Faculty, the youngest part of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, an organisation which dates back more than 400 years.

Professor Baird said: “I felt honoured when I heard I had been elected to the position. It is a huge responsibility but I am looking forward to the challenges which the next few years will bring.”

The Royal College is the only multidisciplinary institution of its kind in the UK. It has a growing membership of 10,000 surgeons and physicians as well as specialists in dentistry, travel medicine and podiatric medicine.

The College supports members’ career by arranging wide ranging, high quality education, training, professional development and assessment.

Professor Baird said the role would help GCU to reinforce its reputation at the forefront of podiatric medicine and education.

“I will work with students to continue to raise their aspirations, introducing them to researchers and practitioners who are at the top of the profession, reinforcing the paths which are open to them.”

Dr Frank Dunn CBE, President of the Royal College said, “I have known Professor Baird for a number of years and he is highly regarded within his profession locally, at a UK level and internationally. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine and I can think of no one more suitable to take on the role of Dean.”
