Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is hosting a Social Innovation research event which aims to build and strengthen the community of international social innovation researchers.

'Social Frontiers: The Next Edge of Social Innovation Research' will take place on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th November at Glasgow Caledonian University’s London Campus in Spitalfields, East London.

The conference is organised by Nesta, Glasgow Caledonian University and TEPSIE with support from The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Oxford, The Social Innovation Exchange (SIX), DESIS Network and The Rockefeller Foundation.

The global field of social innovation is gathering momentum. Yet despite thriving practitioner networks and a real commitment from policymakers and foundations to support social innovation, empirical and theoretical knowledge remains patchy and uneven.

By gathering a multiplicity of voices and perspectives on social innovation, we hope to strengthen and extend existing networks, share learning, promote collaboration, identify gaps in knowledge, and work together to build a common research agenda for the next decade. The agenda will include keynotes from Frances Westley, Geoff Mulgan, Stephen Goldsmith, Roberto Unger and Mariana Mazzucato. The full list of speakers and papers is available here.

Mark Anderson, GCU’s Head of European Programmes, says: “There is a growing recognition that Social Innovation has a crucial role to play in economic development. This shift in focus will have a significant impact on many areas including research and knowledge transfer and will inevitably lead to a sea-change in the way we deliver and measure our activities over the coming years. To address these developments, Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) seeks to define and characterise Social Innovation but also to challenge its emergence as an important focus of policymaking, especially within Europe.”
