Dr Karen Lorimer, a Research Fellow in the School of Health and Life Sciences, and member of the RSE Young Academy of Scotland, awarded prizes to winners of a prestigious international photo contest, organised by the European Young Academies.

‘Visions and Images of Fascination: Humanities and Sciences Visualised’ aimed to build bridges that strengthen the understanding of the sciences and humanities among the broad public. Ten images were chosen from over 300 entries, and the winners presented with their awards at a ceremony held at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Germany.

The competition was a joint venture for various Young Academies, including the RSE Young Academy of Scotland, Die Junge Akademie of Germany, De Jonge Akademie of the Netherlands, The Young Academy of Sweden and The Council of Young Scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and supported by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

The winning photographs will be presented in a series of exhibitions in Berlin, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Moscow and Stockholm.

Dr Lorimer said: “It was an honour to represent Scotland and present the awards, but also to be playing a part in strengthening the network of Young Academies through such an enjoyable and innovative venture.  Young Academy members like me are dedicated to interdisciplinary discourse and are active at the interfaces between academia and society.”
