The new lab aims to improve efficiency in the oil and gas industry

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) formally launched its FMC Technologies Subsea Opto-Electronics laboratory with two lectures by a leading expert on solutions for the oil and gas industry.

In a presentation to students on Tuesday, March 27 specialist consultant to FMC Technologies Dr Danny McStay will discuss Heritage to Hydrocarbons: The Role of Applied Opto-electronics, followed by a second open evening lecture for industry professionals and invited guests.

The growing global demand for oil and gas is driving producers to increase the overall efficiency of the production process and to operate in more extreme conditions with minimal environmental impact. Opto-electronic technologies are seen as one of the key technologies in enabling the industry to meet these challenges.

Dr McStay described how optoelectronic technologies have developed over the last decade for applications ranging from heritage to pharmaceuticals, as well as giving examples of how they have been adapted to meet oil and gas industry requirements.

Dr McStay is one of the architects of the groundbreaking five-year collaboration research agreement between FMC Technologies and GCU, where new technology is now being developed as part of potential multi-million pound research programmes to enable safer and more efficient oil recovery from deeper water and harsher environments than ever before.

Professor Brian Stewart, who is leading the collaboration from GCU, said, “We are delighted to welcome Danny McStay from FMC Technologies who will be giving a plenary lecture on the application of optoelectronics related to the subsea oil and gas industry.

“We are also very excited at the formal launch of the FMC Technologies lab at GCU. This is the start of an exciting period of new research initiatives and new strategic opportunities for both FMC Technologies and GCU through our joint research collaboration agreement.”
