GCU enterprising students get ready for Enactus UK national competition

Enterprising students from Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) are through to the Enactus UK National Competition, taking place in London on April 10.

Enactus is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action.

The national competitions are a showcase of how students are transforming lives and enabling progress.

From April to July of this year, Enactus teams will compete at 36 national competitions, where the quality and impact of their social innovation projects will be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. The winner of each national competition will go forward to represent their country at the Enactus World Cup 2017 in London in October.

The Enactus GCU team made it to the UK National Finals for the second year in succession.

To reach the finals, they came through a qualifying round of Scottish Regional Finals, where they pitched their change-maker projects to a 10-strong panel of business judges.

Supported by the Dean of Glasgow School for Business and Society, Professor Toni Hilton, the GCU team will be presenting two social innovation projects: the Work Ready Action Programme (WRAP), which sees students mentor school pupils from Castlemilk; and Mission’s Kitchen, an innovative partnership with Glasgow City Mission, with whom students have a project working alongside City Mission staff and homeless people to develop a jam-making social enterprise. 

Under the Presidency of Laura-Jane Howard (Level 3 Business Management), the team’s entrepreneurial spirit and drive have led them to enter five Enactus Individual Topic Competitions.  

Dr Alec Wersun, Senior Lecturer in the Glasgow School for Business and Society, said: “Our results have been fantastic. Not only has the team won £1900 in prize money, but they have also reached the final round in four categories supported by corporate sponsors.”

In 2016, GCU’s student team was named one of four Most Improved Teams for their progress on a range of projects supporting the local community, and also as runner-up in the Ernst & Young Empowering Youth award.
