Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) has been shortlisted for two responsible business awards.

The University is a finalist in the Business in the Community (BITC) Scotland Closing the Education Gap category.

And GCU has also been shortlisted in the Education category of the UK-wide 2016 Responsible Business Awards.

GCU has played a key role in widening access to education and community engagement through its multi award-winning Caledonian Club, which sees students and staff work with nursery, primary and secondary schools to raise educational aspirations.

Since its establishment in 2008, the Caledonian Club has supported 11,500 children, 3000 families and 500 student mentors. Pupils at its five partner secondary schools in Glasgow have achieved double the rate of progression into Higher Education over the past eight years.

The Caledonian Club now supports communities near to GCU London campus and is looking forward to working in New York shortly.

Eleanor Wilson MBE, Director of Outreach and Community Engagement at GCU, said: “We are proud Business in the Community has recognised our credentials as a responsible business and we will continue to work for the common good. Our goal at Glasgow Caledonian University is to transform lives through education, working for the benefit of the communities we serve in Scotland and across the world.”

GCU will vie for the Scottish award with SQA, Amey and Michelin, with the winners to be announced at the 2016 Responsible Business Awards Dinner and Ceilidh in Edinburgh on June 28. Winners of the UK Awards will be announced at BITC’s Annual Responsible Business Gala at the O2 in London on 11 July.

Jayne-Anne Gadhia, Chief Executive of Virgin Money and Chair of the BITC Scotland Advisory Board, said: “I believe that business should be a force for doing good and companies should support their communities to help them flourish, both socially and economically.

“BITC Scotland’s Awards recognise those businesses for which responsible business is not a bolt-on activity carried out at arm’s length, but embedded in the heart of their strategy and operational practice. The Awards bring to life how businesses across Scotland – of all sizes, sectors and scale – are creating innovative and sustainable solutions.”
