Professor Miller began his career in 1986 as a Clinical Nurse in the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh after graduating from North Lothian College of Nursing and Midwifery. He became Quality Facilitator and Deputy Director of Nursing for West Lothian Healthcare NHS Trust in 1992 and remained there until 2001, by which time he had become Divisional General Manager. He was Divisional General Manager of South Glasgow University Hospitals NHS Trust from 2001 to 2005, when he became Chief Executive of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He was appointed Director of the Open University in Scotland in 2010. Professor Miller gained an MBA from Napier University in 1998 and a PhD from Edinburgh University in 2004.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and has been a Visiting Lecturer at four Scottish universities, teaching on undergraduate and Masters programmes in nursing, healthcare management and clinical leadership. He has published in peer-reviewed national and international journals on a range of clinical and management issues in healthcare and is a regular reviewer for a number of national and international healthcare journals.

Professor Miller joins GCU on August 1, 2015 as it prepares to launch its 2020 Strategy, which aims to enhance GCU’s defining position as a University for the Common Good and build further its reputation at home and overseas for excellence in education, research, social innovation, widening access and graduate employability.

Professor Miller said: “I am very excited about taking up the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor at GCU. Working with the staff and students in taking forward the visionary and ambitious agenda outlined in the 2020 strategy will be a great privilege.”

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s portfolio of responsibility includes GCU’s School of Engineering and Built Environment, School of Health and Life Sciences, Glasgow School for Business and Society and GCU London, as well as the GCU British School of Fashion, the School for Work-Based Education, Strategy and Planning, and Communications and External Relations.

GCU Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE said: “I am delighted by the appointment of Professor James Miller as our new Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Professor Miller is a hugely respected figure in Scottish higher education, and beyond. He will provide outstanding leadership for the interdisciplinary working of our Academic schools, and for the implementation of our 2020 Strategy. I know that colleagues across GCU look forward to welcoming him to our University community.”
