Professor Muhammad Yunus presents a social business address

An Audience with Professor Muhammad Yunus hosted by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce took place at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) on Tuesday, June 30.

Professor Yunus, Chancellor of GCU and Nobel Laureate, delivered an address focusing on how social business is helping to alleviate poverty across the world.

“We have taken the objective of philanthropy and put a business engine behind it. That means the money that is spent does the job but, unlike philanthropy, it comes back again and continues to be ploughed into the social business. The intention of social business is not to make money, but to provide a solution to a problem,” he said.

Professor Yunus highlighted successful examples, such as the Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing in Dhaka, co-founded with GCU as a social business to raise the standard of nursing education and provide opportunities for young people in Bangladesh.

The event was opened by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce President Vic Emery and Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE. It was attended by members of GCU staff and members of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, and guests from third sector organisations.
