Professor Sara Cantillon has joined Glasgow Caledonian University's (GCU) Glasgow School for Business and Society as Professor of Gender and Economics and Director of the WiSE Research Centre.

Joining GCU from University College Dublin, where she was Head of the School of Social Justice and Director of the Equality Studies Centre, Professor Cantillon has extensive research and policy experience in gender and the economy.

Her main areas of research are equality, poverty, gender and intra-household distribution. She has worked as an Economic Advisor to the Department of the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) and was the National Expert on the EU Commission’s Network of Experts in the Field of Socio-Economic Discrimination 2010-2014. She was appointed by the Irish Minister for Education to the Expert Group on Future Funding for Higher Education 2014-2016.

Professor Cantillon replaces the founder of the WiSE Research Centre, the renowned Professor of Economics, Ailsa McKay, who died last March.

Professor Cantillon said: “We aim to research the interaction between gender and the economy on a wide basis and to showcase WiSE as a Centre for the importance of a feminist economics approach in mainstream economics, within academia, policy making and everyday life.”

The WiSE Research Centre also recently appointed Dr Caitlin McLean to the post of Ailsa McKay Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Dr McLean will undertake research on how the adoption of a Citizens Basic Income (CBI) could contribute to greater gender equality.
