Professor Mal Young, the man behind some of Britain’s most successful dramas, delivered a masterclass to MA TV Fiction students, graduates, staff and industry guests.

Mal Young returned to the University as an Honorary Professor to share his experiences of writing and producing in the UK and US.

During his seven-year tenure as BBC Head of Drama, Professor Young championed the return of the iconic Dr Who series, produced EastEnders and brought Doctors, Holby City and Waking the Dead to the screens. He steered Brookside through its heyday and talked about writing scenes which challenged society and, in some instances, led to changes in the law.

Professor Young, who was appointed an Honorary Professor by GCU in 2014, runs his own production company in the US, Dynamo Entertainment. He told MA TV Fiction writers that they were living through a golden age of TV which offers greater opportunities than ever before.

He said: "What I particularly love is that the MA TV Fiction Writing programme is run by people who have experience in the industry and are passing on their knowledge. It's important that people who teach and lead know what they're talking about – it’s a unique course because of that."

Speaking of his appointment as an Honorary Professor, he added: "It is a great honour. I have always been so proud of my association with the University and for it to be recognised was quite touching. It is a responsibility and I want to tell the world what a great programme and University this is."

MA TV Fiction writing lecturer and TV script writer Professor Ann Marie di Mambro said: “We are thrilled to welcome Professor Young back to GCU to speak to our students and staff as one of the most influential figures in television.

“The masterclass was an opportunity for students and aspiring writers interested in MA TV Fiction Writing to find out more about the industry from one of television’s highly respected and visionary writers and producers."
