Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is hosting an event on Wednesday, January 14, to give armed forces personnel information on making the move from the military to university or college.

The one-day event is aimed at British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel who have two years or less before leaving HM Forces and are considering studying. It will inform them about the educational pathways available to enhance their potential for a successful transition to civilian life.

Speakers on the day will include Rear Admiral John Clink OBE, Flag Officer for Scotland and Northern England, Glasgow’s Helping Heroes, transition specialists, and academic advisers from the higher and further education sector.

A host of employer organisations will also be on campus, including Thales UK, BAE Systems, Police Scotland, OPITO, VINE (Veterans into New Enterprise) and Hospital Trusts.

Jim Castle, of GCU’s School of Engineering and Built Environment, said: “This event is for armed forces personnel to learn about the opportunities on offer and meet representatives from GCU and a range of companies.

“I would encourage all those who are considering a return to education to come along and find out how they can further develop their skills and experience, and build on their potential in civilian life.”

GCU is an approved Armed Forces Transition Learning Provider through its partnership with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) and the Enhanced Learning Credit (ELC) scheme.

In 2014, the University launched the HM Forces Learning Partnership, an initiative that provides ex-servicemen and women with a pathway to employment via higher education. The partnership is intended to address the fact that ex-HM Forces personnel, particularly those who leave the service after a short time, may not consider education as part of their transition back to civilian life.

Brigadier P K Harkness MBE, Commander, said: “The HM Forces Learning Partnership has provided those leaving the Armed Forces with an invaluable opportunity to help them consolidate the knowledge they have acquired during their time in uniform and assist them in developing themselves much further."

The HM Forces Transition Day will take place from 9am in the Deeprose Theatre at GCU. To register to attend the event, visit Eventbrite.
