GCU launches Strategy 2020

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is reinforcing its defining position as the University for the Common Good with the launch of its Strategy 2020. Crafted by students, staff and lay governors following extensive consultation, the Strategy has been endorsed by GCU Chancellor and Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE said: “As University for the Common Good, we will harness all of the institution’s intellectual, social and emotional capital to work collaboratively with others to deliver social benefit. We aim to do this in a way that embraces, yet goes beyond the traditional role of a university in the creation, curation and transfer of knowledge and problem-solving skills. I believe that this ambitious and bold Strategy, collectively agreed upon, will allow us to exceed our expectations in our ability to deliver academic excellence, an outstanding student experience and social benefit, as we work together towards 2020.”

GCU’s Strategy 2020 goals are:

  • Transforming lives through education - In 2015, GCU received the highest outcome from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) for its management of academic standards and the student learning experience. The University will build on this by delivering an outstanding student experience which develops the employability and social entrepreneurial skills required in today’s global graduates. In addition, GCU will deepen its commitment to widening access in partnership with schools and colleges and through initiatives such as the Caledonian Club, which works with children from three to 18 years old, and their families, in Glasgow communities with below average rates of progression to higher education.
  • Enriching cities and communities through research - As the top modern university in Scotland for research power, GCU will focus on its key areas of strength in inclusive societies, healthy lives and sustainable environments to address societal challenges at home and overseas.
  • Innovating for social and economic impact - GCU will provide solutions to real-world problems in partnership with business, the public and voluntary sectors through applied research, knowledge exchange, consultancy and the co-creation of programmes, reinforced by a culture of social entrepreneurialism and innovation, and developed and shared at a global level through pioneering digital approaches.
  • Engaging globally - With campuses in Glasgow, London and New York, and partnerships in Oman, Bangladesh and Africa, GCU will strengthen its international presence, deliver a globally relevant experience for students, engage in new ways with learners, partners and communities overseas, and develop further alliances in research and business development.
  • Aligning for the Common Good - GCU places active and cooperative effort towards the creation of a better, fairer world at the heart of its Strategy 2020, and is committed to developing and deepening strategic relationships with local and global thought leaders to champion social justice at home and overseas. This is exemplified through GCU initiatives such as the Caledonian Club; the GCU Centre for Climate Justice, which is working with communities in Malawi, Asia and Zambia; the facilitation of Grameen in the UK, a microlending programme operating in the west of Scotland to help alleviate poverty;  and the co-founding of the Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing in Bangladesh to raise healthcare education standards and provide career opportunities.
