On this page you will find links to sources of key statistical data for the UK, Europe and worldwide. You will also find links for statistical data by subject including business, crime, economy, finance and health.

Many of our subscription databases such as ProQuest and Passport hold searchable statistical data. If you want to use a specific web search engine to find statistical data try ZANRAN. For official global statistical data – searchable by country, region or subject explore the OFFSTATS site.

UK and Scottish
  • The Office for National Statistics (ONS) produces official statistics for the UK including the economy, population and society at national, regional and local level
  • UK Data Service provides a single point of access for a range of key statistical data including qualitative, quantitative and multimedia datasets. Data includes UK surveys, cross-national surveys, longitudinal studies, international and business microdata and census information. Themes include ageing, labour, crime, housing and health
  • Scottish Census Data
  • Scottish Government statistics provide current comprehensive statistics on the Scottish economy and society which can be browsed by theme
Census and population data

UK Data Service Census Support exists to provide access to and support for users of the 1971-2011 Censuses of Population. It is restricted to academic users in UK HE and FE institutions and aims to provide access to census data in a friendly and intuitive way.

The service provides:

  • Aggregate data which provides area counts of individuals or households. Flow data is also known as interaction data and this provides information on origins and destinations. Migration and commuting are the two most common forms of flow data
  • Microdata relate to individuals. Large samples of these are drawn and anonymised; these are known as Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs)
  • Boundary data represent the geography of the census
  • Census related data such as deprivation data and population estimates

  • Histpop online historical population reports 1801-1937. Drawing its information from the UK census, the Registrar General, legislation, essays and the National Archives, this online collection covers the births, deaths, marriages and other social habits of the British population from 1801 to 1937

  • NHS Digital (formerly Health and Social Care Information Centre) is a provider of high quality information, data and IT systems for health and social care. Section on international statistics helps compare the UK with health systems in other countries
  • Information Services Division (ISD) is a division of National Services Scotland, part of NHS Scotland. ISD provides health statistics including waiting times, emergency care and sexual health
  • NHS statistics use the drop down option for Policy area to see statistics for the National Health Service
  • Scottish health and social care statistics including provision and use of health and community services in Scotland
  • ScotPHO: Scottish Public Health Observatory includes summary data and statistics relating to the health of the Scottish population and the factors that affect it including: clinical risk factors, alcohol, drugs and specific diseases
