The cause and effect diagram represents the relationship between some effect and all possible "causes" influencing it. Basically the Fishbone is a pictorial representation of the problem. It has a large arrow pointing to the name of the problem. The lines off the large arrow represent main categories of potential causes (or solutions). Typically categories are people, methods, materials and environment.
