Our services

Our aim is to widen access to legal services within the local community and as a result we are only able to offer support and advice to those persons who:

  • Do not qualify for legal aid and
  • Cannot afford professional legal advice, such as the instruction of a solicitor

We are able to help clients in a number ways, such as:

  • providing general legal advice
  • drafting legal letters
  • representing clients in court
  • negotiating on behalf of clients in contractual disputes

All of the advice and assistance provided by our volunteers is carefully supervised by qualified legal practitioners. Even if you are unsure as to whether or not you qualify for the legal services we offer, do not hesitate to contact us as we may be able to help you find alternative legal assistance.

Reclaiming of letting agent fees

If you are renting or have rented accommodation in Scotland within the last 5 years you may be entitled to a refund, if you have been charged any of the following fees by your letting agent:

  • administration or holding fees
  • credit or reference check fees
  • inventory fees or fees relating to the copying of the lease
  • excessive charges for the replacement of furniture, even where you caused the damage
  • renewal fees or transfer of tenancy fees
  • transfer fees to formally assign a tenancy to someone else
  • any other fee that was not a deposit or rent

Unfortunately it is common practice by some letting agents to charge these fees, however, it is not widely known that recent developments in the law have clarified that these charges are unlawful.

If this has happened to you, or if you are unsure, please contact us as we can provide expert advice and assistance in recovering the fees for you.
