Under the microscope
Microbiology research at Glasgow Caledonian University is underpinning consumer health in many everyday products found in supermarkets and pharmacies around the world.
From toothpaste to washing machine cleaners, microbiologists from our Biological and Biomedical Science labs are working with the UK’s leading consumer healthcare companies to help ensure the household items we all use are safe.
This includes enhancing understanding of how to destroy biofilms – groups of bacteria and fungi glued together and stuck onto surfaces like teeth, skin and nails. The researchers are also analysing the oral microbiome to help develop new antimicrobials for toothpaste and other products to prevent and treat infections in the mouth.
With world-renowned reputations, Professor of Infection Prevention and Control Gordon Ramage, Dr Ryan Kean, Dr Will Johnston and Dr Mark Butcher test everyday products for safety and provide evidence to companies to support their claims around health benefits.
“We play a vital role in protecting the public by making sure everyday products such as washing powder, toothpaste and anti-fungal treatments are safe to use and live up to their claims to safeguard health and kill harmful germs,” says Professor Ramage.
Backed by 20 postgraduate and undergraduate students and supported by major funders including Innovate UK and the BBSRC, the team works with companies including Unilever, Haleon and Dentherapy, to develop and refine products that help prevent infections and promote public health.
These collaborations ensure that research translates into real-world impact, delivering safer, more effective health products for consumers.
