Suzanne studied Biochemistry at undergraduate level and undertook her PhD at the University of Liverpool, working with Professor Paul Hiscott on the extracellular matrix glycoprotein, SPARC, in proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). In 2002, following completion of this PhD, Suzanne joined the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow, as a post-doctoral researcher. This position involved working on the metastasis suppressor protein, RKIP, in breast and colorectal cancer with Professor Walter Kolch. In 2007, Suzanne joined Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) as a post-doctoral researcher working on gene expression in CFS/ME.
In 2010, Suzanne was appointed as a lecturer in Vision Sciences, where she is Post-Graduate Tutor for the department of Life Sciences and is Module Lead of both the MSc COVR Research Projects and of the Final year Optometry Research projects. Suzanne’s research interests are in the biological mechanisms underlying ocular surface disease, including dry eye disease (DED).
In addition to her academic and teaching role at GCU, Suzanne is a visiting researcher at the IOBA Eye Institute at the University of Valladolid, Spain and is an Editorial Board Member (UK) for EPMA, The European Association for Predictive, Preventive and Personalised Medicine (www.epmanet.eu). Suzanne is also a member of various professional organisations, such as the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the Biochemical Society and the British Society of Cell Biology.
