BA (Hons) Graduate Apprenticeship Business Management

The purpose of the BA (Hons) Business Management Graduate Apprenticeship is to create well-rounded and knowledgeable managers of the future. By the time of completion, you will be able to demonstrate deep knowledge in a wide range of business and management subjects including strategy, leadership, risk management, business law, marketing, finance, brand management, project management, innovation, business ethics. Each subject benefits from a combined academic and work based perspective where you will be expected and encouraged to enhance your reflective practice skills and personal and professional development knowledge.  Your application of learning to work experience on a real-time basis will create benefits for you and your employer.

Glasgow Caledonian University’s common good principles and values are embedded in GCU’s Business Management curriculum. You will gain an understanding of the complexities of the global business environment and develop skills on how to manage them, including consideration of the intercultural issues relating to management.

From a human capital and talent management perspective,  employers can increase their skills pipeline within the business. An employer may either upskill current employees and or recruit new talent into the business and support them through the Graduate Apprenticeship course. 

All Apprenticeships are fully-funded by the Scottish Funding Council. Applicants will also need to complete a SAAS Graduate Apprenticeship application form. The course team will review skills, knowledge, academic qualifications and experience of all applicants, which will all be used to inform the level of the apprenticeship candidates will begin their education.

All entry requirements listed here should be used as a guide and represent the minimum required to be considered for entry. Applicants who are made a conditional offer of a place may be asked to achieve more than is stated.

Standard entry

For new employees applying directly from school:

SQA Higher: BBBB including English plus Nat 5 Maths at C

at which level of the Apprenticeship candidates will begin their education.

Foundation Apprenticeships

We accept selected Foundation Apprenticeships, in combination with SQA Highers, for entry to our degree programmes. Your Foundation Apprenticeship will take the place of one SQA Higher qualification for our standard entry requirements and will be treated as equivalent to a B grade at Higher.

Additional requirements

Candidates must be employed in the same field as the course of study and must supply a supporting letter from their employer as part of the admissions process.

You must be living and working in Scotland in the same field as the Graduate Apprenticeship course you are applying to.

This Graduate Apprenticeship is suited to candidates in roles ranging team leader, supervisor, managers in operations, customer service, HR, procurement, supply chain and a broad range of management roles in the public, private, or not-for-profit sectors.

The programme is adaptable to the needs of those mid-career pathway as well as those in senior roles seeking to catch-up on academic and professional qualifications.

This programme is designed to meet the Chartered Management Institute benchmark statements for the Chartered Manager qualification; successful candidates are eligible to apply to gain this additional qualification.

The Graduate Apprenticeship has a typical duration of four years for first-year entrants.  Programme duration may be less for candidates who can demonstrate work experience and prior learning through the University’s Recognition of Prior Learning process.

You will attend an initial four-day induction followed by attendance five days every trimester. This breaks down into:

Trimester A
Two blocks of two and a half days’ attendance (mid-September to mid-December)

Trimester B
Two blocks of two and a half days’ attendance (mid-January to mid-April)

Trimester C
Two blocks of two and a half days’ attendance (May to August).

Year 2

Exit award: Diploma of Higher Education level

Year 3

Exit award: BA Business Management (Degree Level)

Graduate Apprenticeships are co-designed by GCU and industry partners. GCU invites a diverse range of guest lecturers - dependent on relevant subject areas, current industry news and course needs - to share their expertise in every subject area.

A Graduate Apprenticeship is a work based degree course, where learning is applied and assessed in the workplace. You will be responsible for your own learning and assessment but supported by workplace mentors.

The course is delivered via blended learning, (online and face to face). All reading material, tutor discussions, assignment setting, marking and feedback, timelines and key dates are located online in the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), GCU Learn. You will also have access to the University’s award-winning library.

In the final year of the course, you will work with your mentor and employer to identify a suitable work based project which will form part of the assessment for honours level study.
