Dr Shirley Rate

Associate Dean of Learning, Teaching and Quality
Dr Shirley Rate is the Associate Dean (Learning, Teaching and Quality) in the Glasgow School for Business and Society. Prior to taking up this role, Shirley was Head of Department, then Subject Group Leader of Fashion, Marketing and Retailing in the School. Her main teaching and scholarly research interests are in marketing, advertising and communications and she has been involved in various consultancy projects in marketing and communications planning. Her principal research interests centre on market segmentation and its application to the mature market with specific reference to the hospitality industry. She completed her PhD in this area from the University of Strathclyde.

Since taking up the role of Associate Dean (Learning, Teaching and Quality), Shirley’s work involves all aspects of enhancing the quality of the student experience through improvements and innovations in learning and teaching practice. In particular, her focus is on increasing student engagement with the processes of quality enhancement and assurance in the School and building collaborative approaches to curriculum design and management.
