Dr Douglas Chalmers is a Caledonian Scholar and lectures in Media and Journalism at Glasgow Caledonian University

An economist by profession, Dr Chalmers has specialised for over ten years in the economics of minority languages, arts and culture and has undertaken research and consultancy for many organisations, including Creative Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, City of Glasgow Council, The Gaelic Arts Agency (Pròiseact nan Ealan), and the Gaelic Language Board (Bòrd na Gàidhlig).


Until October 2011, he was the contract holder and local co-ordinator for a European Union Framework 6 Integrated Project DYLAN - Language Dynamics and the Management of Diversity. In the period 2005-2010 he was also a member of the BBC's Audience Council Scotland, advising the BBC Trust on issues of minority language transmission - in particular Scottish Gaelic.

Some of Dr Chalmers's work has concerned: The Development and future of Gaelic Broadcasting; Economic Development and Minority Language Policy; The Economic Impact of Gaelic Arts and Culture; Integrating Minorities into Economic and Social Life; The Politics of Scottish Devolution; The Use of Technology in Higher Education.
